Ohio to eliminate horse-back dog training...

I have received preliminary information from the state of Ohio (Division of Wildlife) that they intend to eliminate all dog training from horseback at the dog training areas in the state where such activity is still ongoing. According to the DOW, such use is "incompatiable" with the intended land use. I will post additional information when it becomes available.

A few months ago Don Beauchamp of Cheney Kansas reported that a puppy out of one of his red setters (Chaparral) had placed in a big All Age stake on the North Dakota Prairies. Kylie’s Rising Star (red setter male whelped Sept. 4, 2008) took a 3^rd place against 24 major circuit All-Age Derbies. Nine professional All-Age handlers competed with their top prospects at the Dr. D.E. Hawthorne Border Classics hosted by the North Dakota Open All-Age Field Trial Club at Columbus, North Dakota, September 9, 2009. The open All-Age Derby concluded on September 15. Star was only 1 year old at the time of the trial.

Well, we finally got a couple of pics of this dog. Better yet, "Star" is owned by a 6 year old girl in Texas by the name of Kylie Hill who sometimes handles her off of horseback! She occasionally lets her dad Gary work the dog :) Great job Kylie, Gary, and Star!

The Purebred Canine

While the bench and show community continues to espouse the advantages of breeding "purebred" dogs, the reality of this archaic and ill-conceived mis-understanding of canine genetics is simple... breeding purebred dogs for generation after generation without regard to their working qualities produces dogs with multiple health problems.

The National Red Setter Field Trial Club uses a performance-based breeding standard. We do not believe that breeding dogs for show is a sound genetic tool, and in fact, will result in genetic issues that will cause health problems in the breed.

Red Dog In Training...

Steve Witz of Idaho sent a few pictures of one of his red dogs... this is Pal, a red setter out of King Cormac x Flushing Whip Flash Edition, working through the paces in the high country. Steve says she's hitting her birds and holding very nice, working on wild coveys of huns and grouse. Steve also owns another red dog, Cherry, out of Breakstone x Applebee.

Lil red setter/Moxi

Just wanted to share these photos especially to anyone who may think that Irish Setters can't hunt. Moxi, here in these photos, is a 37lb. dual registerd field bred irish setter now coming up on 5 years of age. Moxi hunts preserve birds at a local preserve for large groups where she has surprised many with her ability to find and handle birds.
Moxi also competes in field trials and has a few wins to her name.
Not to mention she is also excellent on wild birds, woodcock, grouse and pheasant. Moxi is an excellent dog to hunt with she always finds something. Sometimes skunk , porqupine or raccoon etc... etc... all of which she will point and wait till I arrive to give her her next command even if it takes me 10 to 15 minutes to get to her.
There have been several times now it has taken me longer to drive to a hunting location than the time we spent afield before bagging our limit. I've had the pleasure of seeing her do some pretty amazing things in the field that I think would be amazing for any dog not my own and regardless of the breed.
Moxi is the result of a breeding I did with hope that I would get that one pup that would possess the the positive attributes of her parents and indeed she does.
