While the bench and show community continues to espouse the advantages of breeding "purebred" dogs, the reality of this archaic and ill-conceived mis-understanding of canine genetics is simple... breeding purebred dogs for generation after generation without regard to their working qualities produces dogs with multiple health problems.
The National Red Setter Field Trial Club uses a performance-based breeding standard. We do not believe that breeding dogs for show is a sound genetic tool, and in fact, will result in genetic issues that will cause health problems in the breed.
FUNCTION DICTATES FORM

Pedigree Dogs Exposed made by Jemina Harrison was one of the best recent contributions for better health in purebred dogs. It generated a set of new regulations in the UK Kennel Club. Like a campagn fit for life, fit for function and advices for conformation judges to be educated at field trials. So some bridging of cultures now divided.
