This photo is of a dying homeless man's last wish was to see his dog one more time. Yurtie, a female dog used to live with Cedar Rapids 57 year old Kelvin Mc Clain in his car.

Unfortunately, Kevin became ill with lung cancer. Hospice employees say it was the most touching moment ever. And it was their last time together. Kevin died shortly after he met the dog. Yurtie how lives with a new family.

Picture's of Anthony's Sadie inspired me to post these of my dog Brody. He's 2.5 yrs old, and also heavy to Bearcat lineage on both sides (son of Chaparral). Most of my pictures of him on point are in the thick stuff, so here's one in the open to show what he looks like. Drinking in scent.

Brody's my first venture into red dogs -- I've had English setters... which by the way are far easier to see in the woods! Brody blends right in with the bracken ferns and alot of other dead leaves, so the beeper collar on point mode is just about essential.

I pretty much hunt ruffed grouse and woodcock, a little in the Lake states but mostly in New England and NY. But not as much as before kids, of course. Fortunately my job brings me across much of the Northeast, so I always bring my dog and a shotgun, just in case. Northern NY and New England are good places to work in October...
More typical of my dog pictures is this one, pointing a woodcock in Maine.

and a red phase grouse extracted from a red pine blowdown -- the hardwoods sprouted up nicely, but most of the time you're three feet above ground on slippery dead logs. But the birds were in there.

This is Sadie 18 months old. Sadie is made up of Bearcat lineage. Finding birds is not a problem for this lil girl she's all business. I happened to snap these shots with my phone. The pheasant had slipped away on us, Sadie did find it again and it didn't get away.

True story and probably most people will never know it...

Here's an interesting sidebar.

After the Japanese decimated our fleet in Pearl Harbor Dec 7, 1941, they could have sent their troop ships and carriers directly to California to finish what they started.

The prediction from our Chief of Staff was we would not be able to stop a massive invasion until they

reached the Mississippi River.

So, why did they not invade?

After the war, the remaining Japanese generals and admirals were asked that question.

Their answer......

They knew that that almost every home had guns and the Americans knew how to use them..

The world's largest army... America's hunters!

I never thought about this...

A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin..

Allow me to restate that number... 600,000.

Over the last several months, Wisconsin's hunters became the eighth largest army in the world.

More men under arms than in Iran..

More than in France and Germany combined.

These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed.

That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania, and Michigan's

700,000 hunters, all of whom have now returned home.

Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.

The point?

America will be forever safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower. Hunting. It's not

just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.

That's why all enemies, foreign and domestic,want to see us disarmed.

Food for thought when next we consider gun control.

Red Dogs Have A Good Day At NBHA Trial !!

The Long Run Bird Dog Club held an NBHA trial in Berea, KY this past Saturday. Jim Ashby convinced Lance Culver and Lauren Hensley to enter their dog, Lakeview Timeless Treasure (Dexter) in the puppy stakes for their first field trial event ever. As things happen the day was a good day for "red". Dexter was first place in the puppy stakes and Jim's puppy Lakeview Rondo Muldoon was second. Dexter is out of a litter of puppies Jim raised in January out of Lucy and Hondo and Rondo is out of a litter in early August. Rondo is the youngest puppy Jim has ever run and he seems to like the opportunity as he has placed 2nd in his first two events.

Lucy (Lakeview Kant Katch Me) was second in the Amateur Shooting Dog stakes and Hondo Muldoon was third.

So the Lakeview crew had a good day at the trial! The red dogs had 4 of the first 6 places given at the trial on Saturday.

Can't keep a good red dog owner down

A couple of months ago I posted a photo of my best friend Julie after her motorcycle accident. Well now I wanted to post another photo so all could see she is recovering very wellsimply to point out it's tuff to keep a good red setter owner down. Julie was out on one crutch i mid November. She's not fully recovered but she had to get out and see what her dog can do now since she hasn't been able to do any field work with Lady the past few months. I had been taking lady out and working with her a little while Julie has been laid up. Julie was most anxious to get out and see her dog work. I promised Julie she would actually be able to shoot a pheasant over her dog if she could hit it. This would be something she has not been able to do since acquiring Lady. Julie also got to see how improved lady's handling has become and finding and holding staunch points even until Julie could get there hobbling with one crutch to flush the bird.

Julie was able to shoottwo nice rooster pheasants over Lady. Now lady does need more work but Julie has now been able to witness what a nice hunting dog her red setter is becoming with minimal training.

Julie's injuries from her accident are as follows: Broken Tibia, fracture to base of skull, severe scalping requiring 60 plus stitches many bumps and bruises

Not long ago I took in a 4 year old red Setter that the owners finally realized they were not doing right by the breeding of this red setter. I in turn gave her to my best friend Julie Crawford and began assisting her in trianing her new red setter as a grouse and pheasant dog. Knowing that this dog came out of Hidalgo kennels I was sure she had a good nose. Sure enough "Lady" showed that she was capable but not accucto to hunting for the gun.

Julie and I have been making great progress with Lady.

But then tragedy struck and Julie was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in late August just one week after this photo of Julie and lady was taken.

Julie was seriously injured leaving her with 60 stitches in her head, fracture neck vertabrae, a broken leg wich required surgery and a weeks stay in the hosptial and 3 weeks of recovery away from home and her cherrished red Setter "Lady". The good news is Julie will make a full recovery and will be able to get some hunting in late autumn. Julie has been able to return home for short periods to see Lady but those visits are short due to the severity of Julie's injuries.

AKC to permit ATVs in field trials...

Well known Michigan Brittany Field trialer and longtime AKC judge, Jeff Reed, after a 3 year legal fight, has successfully forced the AKC to allow ATVs and horses in all AKC Pointing breed stakes for qualified mobility disabled pointing breed field trial handlers. The following attached AKC letter states under what rules and regulations ATVs and horses in walking stakes can be used without AKC penalty. Medical information is not to be sent to the AKC but to the particular state government controlling the field trial area. For the first time since the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act was passed , the AKC was found to be in total non compliance for 21 years in a continued effort to deny mobility disabled dog handlers a mobility accommodation to run their dogs with alternative means of conveyance such as ATVs and horses. Said Jeff Reed after receiving notice he could use a horse in any AKC stake his dog is qualified to run including ALL walking stakes, "I spent well over $5,000 dollars in legal costs and was prohibited from AKC field trialing for 3 years to get this AKC Pointing Breed Rule Book changed to accommodate the disabled field trial person. I hope to see some folks who were denied the opportunity to run their dogs with ATVs or horses to now run in any stakes they could not medically walk to compete. In Michigan 2 field trialers have already been approved to use an ATV or a horse in a walking pointing breed stakes."

AKC approves outcrossings for several breeds...

The AKC Board took the following actions at its July meeting:

"Lhasa Apso Stud Book
"The Board VOTED to approve a request from the American Lhasa Apso
Club (ALAC) to expand the Lhasa Apso gene pool by opening the stud
book to a limited number of Lhasa Apsos from native Tibetan Stock.
Staff will work with the ALAC to develop the procedures to include the
Gompa Lhasa Apso dogs in Open Registration as well as establishing the
breed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service for dogs imported from the
country of origin lacking complete pedigrees in accordance with the
request by ALAC."

"The Registration of Low Uric Acid Dalmatians
"The Board reviewed the results of a vote by the membership of the
Dalmatian Club of America (DCA). By a 55-45% margin, the membership
voted in favor of registering these dogs.
Following a motion by Dr. Newman, seconded by Dr. Smith it was VOTED
(unanimously) to authorize AKC Staff to develop procedures for the
registration of these dogs. The procedures will be developed in
consultation with the Board of the DCA. To ensure that the
introduction of the Low Uric Acid dogs into the registry is an
informed, voluntary decision, the registration numbers for the Low
Uric Acid Dalmatians and their descendents will have a letter
indicator as part of the registration number."

Coyotes and birds...

Researchers have found that areas with the most coyotes had the fewest cats and the most songbirds.

The reason for this is pretty simple: Coyotes prey on cats, raccoons and possums, all of which prey on songbirds and songbird nests. Feral and domestic cats alone kill over three billion birds and small mammals each year in the U.S.!

Resolution of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club

May 15, 2011

Whereas the Board of Directors of the Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America (AFTCA) has proposed an additional $3 fee per dog to be assessed on all dogs running under AFTCA sanctioned events,

Whereas the proposal of a $3 fee per dog would place an undue burden on our club already under financial stress from recent economic events in our country,

Whereas the proposal of a $3 fee per dog would place an additional financial burden on club members, most notably those newer club members who have limited financial resources and are already under financial strain,

Whereas the proposed $3 fee per dog essentially amounts to a tax on our sport, without any obvious benefits for such a tax,

Whereas the proposed $3 fee per dog would place a heavier burden upon non-Championship events due to their larger draws and higher frequency, resulting in an excessive burden upon the hobbyist weekend field trialer,

Whereas the proposed $3 fee per dog is being proposed for questionable reasons, without the benefit of substantial data to support such a proposal,

Whereas the National Red Setter Field Trial Club believes it would be in the best interest of the AFTCA and all its member clubs to release complete and full financial reports to all members of the organization and establish a philosophy of full disclosure,

Whereas the National Red Setter Field Trial Club believes an increase in efficiency and/or a more vigorous management of fiscal operations would be a more suitable proposal for the AFTCA’s financial woes,

We, the members of the Board of Directors of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club hereby express opposition to the AFTCA proposal, and

Furthermore, request that the members of the Board of Directors of the AFTCA support our opposition to this proposal by a “no” vote at the AFTCA Board of Directors meeting.

As many of you are aware, our beloved Finn McCool, the mascot of the Flushing Whip and our editor's inseperable companion passed away this past January. Finny was a product of Ken & Linda Ruff's Brophy Irish Setters. This weekend, we traveled to Sycamore Illinois, home of Brophy Kennels, and picked up the newest addition to our home... meet Flushing Whip Editor In Chief, aka "Ransom"... while he can never replace our Finn McCool, he certainly is bound to fill a void in our family and home... a special thank you to Ken and Linda Ruff for once again making our kennels and our home a better place! I think you might see a picture or two of this guy in the Whip... :)

Help with Technology..

Hi all,

As some of you may know, we have a pedigree datebase for our red setters that currently has close to 4000 dogs... unfortuanately, as with much older technology, the application does not work with more recent operating systems, such as Windows 7. I would like to get the data into a more contemporary format, and if possible, to try and find an open-source server-side app that would allow folks to add to to the database from a website... if there is anyone out there with some time on their hands and a willingness to donate some time and expertise to such a project, I would be appreciative. The Irish Red and White Setter Club of Ireland has announced that they are pursuing a program of outcrossing to Irish red setters to improve their breed, due to concerns about their gene pool. Interestingly, the club has made a specific notation in their program rules that any FDSB Irish red setter (or any Irish red setter that has FDSB blood) would not be eligible. So, the Irish Red and White Setter Club is planning to outcross their gene pool to another breed, but they are prohibiting any outcrossing to the single breed that has been most successful in outcrossing to improve their breed? Ummmm... the logic of that philosophy somehow escapes me. Also, it makes one wonder... how do these folks intend to ensure that there hasn't been some outcrossing occuring in either the Irish red setter population, or the Irish Red and White population? Wait, of course there has been no outcrossing in these two populations; the FDSB Irish red setter population is the only canine gene pool that has ever outcrossed, right?

In the meantime, if any of those folks would like some advice on how to run a successful outcrossing program, feel free to contact us. We're the National Red Setter Field Trial Club. We've done that, and we brought a breed back from extinction. We've also got the best Irish red setters on the face of the earth, and that includes Ireland.

INTERNATIONAL OUTCROSS PROGRAMME FOR IRISH RED SETTERS & IRISH RED & WHITE SETTERS

It is envisaged that any Irish Red Setter or Irish Red & White Setter from an FCI Country and a National Kennel Club which the IKC approves of could be used in this programme. The reason the club suggests that this programme be confined to FCI countries or such National Kennel Club is that agreement in regards to an Outcross Programme would have to be a binding document. As this is an International Outcross Programme the Irish Red & White Setter Club recommends that this would be run with the co-operation of the Irish Red Setter Club and the National Kennel Club of that Country, the Irish Kennel Club and the Irish Red & White Setter Club.

A formal agreement between the two participating Kennel Clubs.

Rules & Regulations for an International Outcross Programme.

All Irish Red Setters and Irish Red & White Setters, which are proposed to be included in this Outcross Programme would have to be approved by the Outcross Committee.
All Irish Red Setters included in this programme would have to have the appropriate health certificates in regards to Canine Leucocyte Adhesion Deficiency, CLAD and a Hip Dysplasia certificate.
All Irish Red & White Setters would require the same certificates plus a certificate in regards to being von Willebrands free.
In regards to testing Irish Red & White Setters for von Willebrands disease, CLAD & Hip Dysplasia the Irish Kennel Club will recommend a Veterinary Surgeon approved by them to carry out this procedure.
The details of all the dogs’ pedigrees, health certificates and all other relevant documents must be presented to the committee four months prior to any mating. Any deviation on this matter must have the approval of the committee.
The Irish Red & White Setter Club is aware that some ‘Irish Red Setters FDSB’ were imported fromAmerica and were mated with Irish Red Setters in Europe . This American Red Setter breeding is not recognised by the American Kennel Club as Irish Red Setters or by the Irish Kennel Club and the Irish Red Setter Club is totally opposed to having dogs with such breeding being introduced to the Irish Red Setter gene pool. We are aware that these dogs were crossed with English Setters in the past. Under no circumstances can any dog with such pedigrees be used in any part of the Outcross Programme.
The Irish Red & White Setter Club proposes that all dogs participating in the Outcross Programme would be micro-chipped for identification. It is also proposed that any resulting pups may be DNA tested at the request of the Outcross Committee. This would have to be part of any signed agreement entered into by all participants in the Outcross Programme.

The explosive-sniffing dog was strapped to an assault team member as they took on one of their greatest challenges to date.

He was part of the operation in which the elite US Navy Seals lowered themselves down ropes from three Black Hawk
helicopters into the terrorist supremo's hideout in the town of Abbottabad, Pakistan, on Sunday.
The world's most wanted man, 54, was shot dead by a Special Forces marksman during the raid.
Heavily armoured hounds — equipped with infrared night-sight cameras — have been used in the past by the top-secret unit.
The war dogs wear ballistic body armour that is said to withstand damage from single and double-edged knives, as well as protective gear which shields them from shrapnel and gunfire.
German Shepherds have been leading the way in SAS raids in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Wearing oxygen masks, the pooches have been trained to jump from aircraft at 25,000ft, before seeking out insurgents in hostile environments.

The animals will attack anyone carrying a weapon and have become a pivotal part of special operations as they crawl unnoticed into tunnels or rooms to hunt for enemy combatants.
The cameras on their heads beam live TV pictures back to the troops, providing them with critical information and warning of ambushes.
Dogs were also used in the capture of Saddam Hussein and in the killing of the Iraqi dictator's two sons.

Puppy miller operators, American Kennel Club show-dog breeders, right-wing ideologues, and folks who have embraced non-working and defective-by-design dogs, like to spend time inflating the power and influence of HSUS and PeTA.

As Border Collie man Donald McCaig has noted, this has largely been done as an organizing tool and as a way of deflecting away any sensible conversation about breeding for intentional defect, inbreeding, and ruination of working dog breeds.

Of course, HSUS and PeTA are actually very weak organizations that operate as little more than direct mail mills.

In fact, these organizations are so weak, that puppy mills operate without much oversight and commercial dog kennels have only the most minimal of legislated standards (and almost no on-the-ground inspections).

You want to know who has real power in America?

It's the NRA -- and I do not mean the National Rifle Association. I mean the National Restaurant Association -- the folks who want to pump you full of Taco Bell buritos, McDonald's quarter pounders, and all-you-can-eat pizza.

Drive down any strip mall and count the fast food outlets. There's not a sign of HSUS or PeTA is there?

HSUS and PeTA as a political force? Gimme a break! These folks are nearly invisible on Capitol Hill.

If you want REAL political power, go to the beef, poultry, dairy, hog, corn, soy and wheat producers in any state. That's power!

You want more power? Go to the Congressional Sportsman's Caucus (the largest caucus in Washington) which makes sure that we continue to have wild lands where hunting and fishing are preserved as core American activities.

The truth is that the headquarters of both HSUS and PeTA are surrounded by Pittman-Robertson hunting lands, national forest hunting lands, and state forest hunting lands.

There is no place in America that is more than 10 miles from a vendor of guns, fishing rods, and ammunition -- or more than 30 miles from public lands on which to use them.

And, sadly, there is probably no place in America that is more than 30 miles from a kennel of horror where dogs are shoved into feces- and urine-soaked cages without mental stimulation of any kind.

But we're supposed to be scared because HSUS and PeTA have all this power? Power to do what? To ask us to eat a salad every once in a while?

It's laughable.

So what's the latest?

The latest is that Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is now putting more hunting rifles, shotguns, and ammunition in its stores.

About a third of Wal-Mart's more than 3,600 U.S. locations sell guns and ammo right now, but that figure will rise to about half as Wal-Mart decides to restore "heritage categories" of merchandise.

Heritage.

Hunting and fishing is part of America's heritage.

Wisconsin dogs...

MADISON, Wis.— A Wisconsin lawmaker wants to ban many felons from owning vicious dogs.

The bill being circulated by Sen. Dave Hansen of Green Bay would make it a misdemeanor for someone convicted of a violent or drug-related felony to own a dog that has been declared vicious by law enforcement or a humane officer.

The misdemeanor could carry up to nine months in prison. If that dog attacks another person and the owner didn't try to control the dog, the owner could be charged with a felony that carries a maximum sentence of up to six years in prison. The prohibition would last 10 years after the felon is released from prison or until the end of the felon's extended supervision.

A dog could be determined "vicious" if it caused serious injury or death to a person or another animal, bit a person without being provoked or is seen as reasonably threatening by another resident. Hansen introduced versions of the bill in the last two sessions, with both bills dying at the end of the Legislative sessions.

The bill includes a provision allowing felons to apply for an exemption based on their livelihood. Hansen said the language was added to protect those who may run breeding operations or require a guard dog for their business. It also allows a felon to appeal the determination of viciousness.

Green Bay Police Lt. Bill Dongle said vicious dogs are being used mostly by felons involved in drug trafficking and those involved in dog fighting operations. Dongle cited one incident in which a SWAT team on a local drug bust was attacked by a pitbull, which police then had to shoot.

The department's animal control officer, Sharon Hensen, said drug task force and probation officers have encountered dogs in at least half of the visits they make. Hensen said felons who use their dogs as weapons should be punished.

"To me it's a very necessary legislative tool," Hensen said. "If a convicted felon cannot hold a gun, why can they have a dog that's so dangerous?"

The Dog Federation of Wisconsin, an advocacy group for dog owners and breeders, opposed the bill in past sessions. Tracey Johnson, the group's vice president, said previous versions prevented a felon from owning a dog that was not spayed or neutered and that such a law ignored the fact that the felon has "served their debt to society."

Johnson said the group had not yet decided whether to support the latest version, but said she thought the definitions of vicious were difficult for a humane officer to interpret.

"In order to have a credible finding, the person observing and or testing the dog would have to be knowledgeable about canine behavior," Johnson said. "The current State of Wisconsin Humane Officer training does not begin to provide those officers with the necessary education to make a vicious dog declaration."

Hensen dismissed the criticism, saying that humane officers know these situations better than normal law enforcement officers.

"I'm very proactive, I don't want to see children get harmed, I don't want to see the elderly get taken down," Hensen said. "If they don't take steps to correct that behavior, they're leading down that path."

Red Setter Places 1st in Ruffed Grouse Society Gun Dog Trial

The Ruffed Grouse Society in Michigan runs a series of regional gun dog trials for their members to compete it. The trials are judged similar to NSTRA events. The top four dogs from each regional trial qualify to compete in the MI Gun Dog of the Year Trial.

I have ran my red setter, Ivy, in these events for the past two years. She had done well, but not well enough to earn a placement. This year was different.... As the lone red setter in the 26 dog field, she ended up in the top spot at the end of the day. She had three finds with a very animated and efficient race. The judges said she was the nicest moving dog at the trial.

For once in my life, some poor shooting actually helped us out. On her third and final find, she locked up hard on a chukar on the edge of a woodlot. I flushed the bird and only managed to hit it lightly with my second shot. The bird sailed down and dropped into a small valley about 100 yards away. Ivy saw it go down and dug into the cover looking for the bird. I heard her bell heading my way, and sure enough, she popped over the hill carrying the bird. She dropped the bird at my feet, shook off some water, and kept right on running. This lengthy retrieve sealed her spot as the top dog of the day.

I don't normally post information on puppies available for sale on the blogsite, since we have a spot on our website to post puppy info, but this is a special case and so I'm taking the liberty of giving someone a little exposure to help him sell some red setters...

Several years ago, 2009 to be exact, a youngster by the name of Brian Morgan attended our National Championship in Berea with his dad. I remember the week well because it was the year that Wing Shot Fling was inducted into the Red Setter Hall of Fame. That year, during our annual auction, Jim Ashby had donated a puppy out of his Hondo litter, and Brian Morgan bid on the puppy and won! Brian joined the National Red Setter FTC, and was actually the youngest dues-paying member in the country. Now, fast forward to 2011. Brian is a bit older now, but still very much involved in red setters. He has his Hondo puppy, called "Lucky", and he also a very nice female called "Roxie" who is largely Brophy breeding out of Ken Ruff's red setter line. As fate would have it, Lucky and Roxie got together, and now Brian has a litter of red setters! Brian has 4 males and 1 female for sale. So, if you've been thinking about getting a red setter, please give Brian a call. This breeding is from quality blood lines... both Jim Ashby and Ken Ruff have been in this game for a while, and have produced high quality red setters time and again. The Life of Finn McCool

Our dear Finn McCool passed on this week... he was a great gun dog, family member, and Deb's inseperable companion around the house. Many of you saw him each month in the Flushing Whip, as he was often with Deb and usually engaged in some Flushing Whip "project!" Here some pics of Finn from over the years... he was a central part of our life and there is an empty place in our home since he is gone...

Deb and Finn during a NAVHDA training session. Finn was the first red setter in 30 years to achieve a Utility Test pass... Deb tested him and they received a Prize II (missed a Prize I only because of his tendency to pull on the lead during heeling!)

This used to be a cart! Finn discovered a mouse inside the cart and decided that "dismantling" the cart was the best way to get the mouse! He got it, too!

Al and Finn taking a nap... this is pretty common in the Faze's house during TV time! Finn was a bit of a "stand-offish" dog with most people, but he loved cuddling with Al and Deb, and this was a typical spot to find him during the evenings.

Some pics taken during a hunter's trial at our local gun club, the TRW Gun Club. Deb often ran Finn in the local hunter's trials, and he had 1st place ribbons in both pointing and water trials. In one water trial, he beat out 25 labs and spaniels to take the blue ribbon. That was a fun day!

Finn on point. He was never a stylish dog, and usually pointed with a flat tail, especially when he was young. But his points were intense, and he had an excellent nose. And, like most good versatile NAVHDA dogs, he pointed anything... birds, rabbits, groundhogs. He also was an outstanding tracker, and could track running game for long distances.

Finn and Al just a couple of months ago... watching TV together. Finn was slowing down by this point, but still went for walks with Al and the puppies in the local woods.

Chantilly Has Passed...

This past week I received the sad news that the great red setter Champion Chantilly had passed on. Dr. Roger Boser informed me that “Kelly” had recently suffered some health problems and had died on December 20 after a short illness. In my years as a member of the Board and Futurity Chair for the National Red Setter Field Trial Club I have had the pleasure of seeing many red setters, and Chantilly was always guaranteed to put on a show. She never disappointed. Sired by the Red Setter Hall of Famer Champion Desperado out of Come Back Dixie Girl, Kelly garnered a total of 85 career placements during her 8 year career, including 5 championships and 9 runner-ups. She started her career by winning the Red Setter Futurity in 1999 and clinched the Red Setter Derby of the Year. Under the tutelage of her owner, breeder, trainer and handler Dr. Boser, Chantilly was a force to be reckoned with.
Chantilly was always a pleasure to watch. She had a racy and smooth going gait, and she seemed to glide over the ground as she gobbled up the terrain. Her intensity and demeanor around game never ceased to inspire, and she had an uncanny ability to dig up wild bird finds where others had gone birdless. Without question her greatest performance was the 2003 National Amateur Shooting Dog Invitational Championship. Here is what Joyce Taylor, the reporter for the Invitational had to say: “This dog is fast. She can fly, no matter the footing, today on snow. She ran a big race, sometime all-age range, and handled well. She improved each day, better than the day before, just what you look for with an Invitational format. She handled to perfection, ran hard and consistently, always to the front. This little Irish setter is an absolute perfectionist on birds with intensity before, during and after flush. She proudly and deservedly took home the runner-up title.”
I was fortunate to see Chantilly run for several years while she was in her prime, both at trials and in training on the prairies and in the Carolinas. She was devoted to her handler Roger, and it was such a pleasure to see them work together as a team. Though she was a wide shooting dog, Chantilly had a “sixth sense” and always seemed to know where her partner was heading, as she would show to the front as if she knew exactly what direction Roger was moving. Roger once told me that working with Chantilly gave him such pleasure because she had such a “team” approach to bird hunting. She was a true partner in the sport.
Chantilly was bred sparingly during her career, but the get she produced was exceptional. Red setters Breakstone and Aiken are but two examples of the exceptional red setters who have come out of Chantilly. Dr. Boser notes that Breakstone may one of the most exceptional red setters in his 40 plus years of field trialing. Aiken has proven to be an outstanding All Age performer, running the Kansas circuit under the direction of Don Beauchamp.
Kelly was retired in 2007, and for the past three years she had been a constant fixture in the Boser household. She always had a special place in the hearts of the Boser family, and usually was found lying next to Roger or his wife Mary in their summer home in Pennsylvania, or at their winter training farm in North Carolina. She will be sorely missed by her family, and by the members of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club. May she hunt in those places where bird dogs go, joining the legions of great red dogs who have gone before her, running the great hunt with Bearcat, Abra, Desperado, and Askew’s Carolina Lady. Rest in peace, Chantilly.

The Night Before Christmas...

It was about time for Christmas, and all through the house
A creature was stirring, but it wasn't a mouse
I knew right away it was my wife's little pup,
She thought we were sleeping, and so she was up

The dog was a gift it was coercion, really,
A woman can pout, 'til a man gets downright silly.
And now the wife was snoozing she was really sacked out
She wouldn't have awoke from less than a shout.

Yes, her in her nightgown, I in my BVDs,
We had finally settled down to catch some Zs
When off in the kitchen there arose such a clatter,
I rolled from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away down the hall, my head in a muddle,
I reached the kitchen...and stepped in a puddle.
The glow from a nightlight illuminated the room,
So how come I stumbled over the broom?

I fell in a sprawl, my legs were not stable.
On the way down, my nose hit the table.
My head was a spinnin' and when I came to rest
Four miniature dog feet stood on my chest.

With a lick and a bark, she bounded away,
Into the living room, she ran to play.
More rapid than mouses, that rat terrier ran,
Me on the follow, rolled newspaper in hand.

"Stop, Skeeter! Stop, Dog! Stop, Pup!
Halt, Pooch! Halt, Girl! Oh, come'ere, you mutt!
"Get off the new couch! Now let go of that curtain!
Ohhh...If I ever catch you, you're gonna' be hurtin'"

As winds of a Texas tornado do fly,
She spun round the room, down low and up high.
Then up on the countertop, that puppy went
She stopped for a second. I thought she was spent.

I make a quick lunge, she ducked me and then
Yawned when I dove through the flour bin.
As I drew out my head and was turning around,
She made for the presents, in a single bound.

I was covered with flour, from my head to my toes,
My robe in tatters, and blood on my nose.
A bag full of toys, she grabbed with glee
I nabbed her, I thought, but instead got the tree.

The ornaments, they broke, as they began to fall
The lights, how they fizzled, and that is not all.
When I reached for the plug, to turn the bulbs out,
What flowed through my body, but electricity, so stout!

As smoke encircled my head like a wreath,
That dog held my big toe, tight in her teeth.
"Skeeter," I moaned, "I give up. Oh, Skeet, I give in."
So she bit my swollen nose, and nipped at my chin.

She spoke not a word, but went back to work,
Down came the stockings it took just a jerk.
Then up from the hall, came the sound of feet,
Momma, it seemed was awake from her sleep.

"Now you'll get it pup," I announced with glee.
Then Skeeter walked over and put her little head on my knee.
She looked up at my wife - so innocent - and at me, so, so sad.
And it didn't take long, to know I'd been had.

Then came the wife's voice, so strong and so clear,
"Bill, you leave that puppy alone! You hear!"
And I exclaimed to myself, as they walked out with a strut,
"Don't leave any gifts, Santa just PICK UP THE MUTT!"

"Sadie " The new Kid on the Block

This spring Kira had a litter of 3. Of these three pups Sadie was the one I kept. One of the reasons I kept her was noone really wanted a red setter with green eyes a brown nose and white fur on it. Those things din't matter to me what I saw in her was all the qualities I was looking for in a pup. She's very brite catches on quick hard driving ,no fear, natural love for birds, yet great around the house comical personality, gentle and sweet natured. I've worked with Sadie very little over the summer because of her age, it wasn't until late summer early fall that I really started woking with her. To anyone who has passed up a red setter pup because it has green eyes and a brown nose, that's a very silly reason. This little pup Sadie up to this point is every bit as good as any brown eye, black nose ,solid red, red setter I've ever had. Sadie's brown nose finds birds very well and her green eyes show that spark that tells you there is someone home in there.

The old addage "don't judge a book by it's cover " applies here.

Lately I've been working with Moxi and Kira together. Kira has very limited experience for her age of 5 yrs. Kira has been paying close attetion to Moxi and has been picking up skills very quick. My last session out with them for pheasants proved to be spectacular. This was the kind of hunt any bird hunter hunting with two dogs would love to experience. Inside of 30 minutes each dog had a point and a back and my shooting was on the mark. Watching it all transpire was exactly what creates a bird dog addict. Shooting the pheasant is mearly a bonus the real reward is being there to witness and appreciate the beauty

this little part of God's creation.

If you've never hunted with a pointing dog you owe to yourself to give it a shot! It's more fun than a day at an amusement park.

Minnesota Moxi

Up here in Minnesota Moxi is still hunting hard. Now 5 years old Moxi is very proficient with pheasant and grouse. Moxi has still been doing work at a local preserve hunting for father son team and small businesses

out for a day with clients. Moxi impresses those that get to shoot over her. Some folks nervous at first because Moxi doesn't always hunt close, being a trial dog she's not afraid to punch out there to find the bird. When folks begin to understand that she can hold a bird until they are able to get there to take a shot, they begin to relax and see the beauty in what's taking place. That's why I began guiding groups so that I could share the beauty of working with a pointing dog and to disprove any thoughts that anyone may have about red dogs being able to hunt. Don't get me wrong Moxi isn't perfect things don't always play out as in the pages of Field & Stream, if I had better writing skills I sure could write a couple good stories now. Moxi and I have many more success stories than we do

failed. It's not just Red Dogs but any dog being used for it's intent and worked with, honing and fine tuning to the level of your own satisfaction. For me to drive an hour to a hunting spot, shoot my limit of two roosters in 30 to 45 minutes... well lets just say, I'm okay with that! To have them pointed for me, priceless.

Scientists Reveal How Fast Dogs Must Shake To Dry Their Fur

If you've ever seen a dog trying to shake itself dry after taking a plunge into water — or perhaps while standing next to the person who just gave it a bath — you've probably noticed that the technique can throw off a shocking amount of water.

That's all part of nature's design, says Andrew Dickerson, a graduate student at Georgia Tech. Talking with NPR's Robert Siegel, Dickerson described his recent study of how fast different animals "oscillate their bodies to shed water droplets," as an abstract of his work states.

For his study called "The Wet-Dog Shake," which appeared in the journal Fluid Dynamics, Dickerson and his colleagues slowed down images of animals — dogs, a bear, even a mouse — shaking themselves dry. The footage was shot with a high-speed video camera.

The researchers found that both bears and dogs shake at a similar speed — around 4 Hz and 4-5 Hz, respectively. In this case, hertz refers to the frequency of skin oscillations per second. And it turns out that the smaller the animal, the faster it has to shake to dry. Thus, a cat can get by with shaking around 6 Hz. But its nemesis, the mouse, requires 27 Hz to dry off.

Dickerson says that his work focuses on discovering mechanisms found in nature. The research on how animals shake off water, he says, may have real-world applications in improving the design of washing machines.

But he does not recommend that any human try to duplicate what is, by many rights, a dog's trick.

"If you were to get down on all fours and try to shake off water after a shower," Dickerson says, "your efforts would be most unfruitful."

Sept. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair said he deliberately sabotaged the ban on fox hunting his government introduced, calling it "one of the domestic legislative measures I most regret."

In his memoir "A Journey," published by Random House today, Blair said he ensured that the 2004 Hunting Act was "a masterly British compromise" that left enough loopholes to allow hunting to continue "provided certain steps were taken to avoid cruelty when the fox is killed." He also told Home Office minister Hazel Blears to steer the police away from enforcing the law.

Blair's 1997 pledge to give Parliament a vote on the subject dogged him throughout his time in office, with lawmakers opposed to hunting repeatedly trying to introduce a ban. Each time, hundreds of thousands of hunt supporters marched through London, and in 2004 some invaded Parliament.

"The passions aroused by the issue were primeval," Blair, 57, wrote. "If I'd proposed solving the pension problem by compulsory euthanasia for every fifth pensioner I'd have got less trouble. By the end of it, I felt like the damn fox."

Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron, who described the law last year as a "farce," has promised a vote on repeal. Since the act came into force in 2005, only three hunts have been successfully prosecuted, according to the Countryside Alliance, which was formed to oppose the ban.

"I won a bet with Prince Charles about this," Blair wrote. "He thought the ban was absurd, and raised the issue with me in a slightly pained way. The wager was that after I left office, people would still be hunting."

Blair said he initially agreed to a ban without properly understanding the issue. Then, during a vacation in Italy, he found himself talking to the mistress of a hunt near Oxford.

"She took me calmly and persuasively through what they did, the jobs that were dependent on it, the social contribution of keeping the hunt and the social consequence of banning it, and did it with an effect that completely convinced me," Blair said.

Michigan Amateur Field Trial Club...

Hi all,

This past weekend I ran my red dogs in my first ever "cover dog" trial... went to the hallowed grounds of Gladwin in Michigan... had a blast and although my red dogs didn't have any placements, they showed some potential for running in the woods. One of my puppies also put up a covey of grouse that had at least 12 birds... THAT was fun!

Thanks to everyone who helped us during the trial... especially Tom, who ran around with me and helped round up one of my dogs who decided to run for an extra hour after her brace! Gladwin is a great place and well worth the trip. And the club members were really a great bunch of folks. I'm planning to go back.

Henry Taylor passes...

Henry Taylor of Grain Valley,Mo. died the last part of May. Henry was one of the founding fathers of the Santa Caligon Irish Setter Club. In the 60's and 70's Henry ran red setters here in the midwest. His kennel prefix was Whirlaway. Some of his red dogs were Whirlaway Pat (Ike Jack Kendrick son), Whirlaway Chief, Johnny Popper. Henry and a gentleman by the name of D. Johnson were instrumental in bringing Ned LeGrande's red setters to our part of the country. Henry Taylor was introduced to me in 1967. My dad had told me he would pay half of a birddog pup. My research at the public library Indicated if you found Irish Setters bred for the field, there would be no equal. I bought my first red setter after a disagreement with my dad. He didn't consider the red pup a good candidate so I bought Lady on my own. A few years later I decided I wanted to raise a litter. I asked advice from my boy scout leader who field trialed. This was my first contact with Mr. Henry Taylor. This man was opinionated, sometimes rude and obnoxious. He was one of the BEST men I ever met. Henry would help anyone when asked. When I decided to break my first dog this was the man I asked for advice. When I went to my first horseback trial at Lee's Summit, MO. I rode a horse furnished by Henry. The Shepler's saddle that I ride originally belonged to Henry. The red setter fraternity lost a good one.
I will miss him.

Henry Julian “Corky” Taylor, 80, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010 at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 4th at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley, MO; burial in Valley Memorial Gardens, Grain Valley. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3rd at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.

Henry was born February 25, 1930, in Belton, Missouri, the son of Henry O. and Emma Lou (Muir) Taylor. He married Mary Carnahan in June 1950. Henry worked in the maintenance department at Sears, where he did mostly carpentry work. He retired from Sears after 37 years of service. He was active in field trials and loved bowling.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, brother Cecil Taylor, grandson Michael Ham, and granddaughter Cheryl Ham.

His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Mary Taylor of the home; three daughters: Linda Ham & her husband, Dwayne, of St. Joseph, MO, Kathy Ward of Blue Springs, MO, Debbie Campfield & her husband, Chuck, of Elk City, KS; one son: Tim Taylor & his wife, Lisa, of Oak Grove, MO; twelve grandchildren & twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Our red setter Finn McCool participated in the annual Fourth of July parade in Chardon Ohio, as he has several times in years past. This year he caught the attention of the local newspaper, and made the press. Finn is the "mascot" of the Flushing Whip, and is usually in the company our editor Deborah Fazenbaker. He was bred by Francis Fountain of Georgia out of Quail Ridge Gabe.

200 lbs. His handler took the picture. Brutus
is running toward me because he knows
I have some Milk Bone treats, so he's
slobbering away! I had to duck around a tree
just before he got to me in case he couldn't
stop, but he did. Brutus won the
Congressional Medal of Honor last year
from his tour in Iraq . His handler and four
other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents.
Brutus and his handler communicate by sign
language and he gave Brutus the signal that
meant 'go away but come back and find me'.
The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus. He
came back later and quietly tore the throat
out of one guard at one door and another
guard at another door. He then jumped against
one of the doors repeatedly (the guys were
being held in an old warehouse) until it opened.
He went in and untied his handler and they all
escaped. He's the first K9 to receive this honor.
If he knows you're ok, he's a big old lug and
wants to sit in your lap. Enjoys the company
of cats.. K-9 Congressional Medal of Honor
Winner.

Governor Pledges to Protect Sporting Dog Enthusiasts

(Columbus, Ohio) – Ohio’s sporting dog owners and hobby breeders are breathing easier after Governor Ted Strickland committed only to support legislation aimed at commercial dog breeders if it preserves adequate protections for sportsmen. The Governor’s commitment is intended to assure sporting dog owners who are concerned that any legislation addressing commercial breeders be done in a way that does not catch hobbyists and hunters in a web of regulations and restrictions.
“The agreement between Ohio agricultural leaders and the Humane Society avoids a costly ballot initiative that would have severely impacted our agricultural community. Instead, the Humane Society has agreed not to pursue a ballot initiative this fall. Importantly, as part of this agreement, we will develop recommendations to the legislature in support of the commercial dog breeding bill,” said Governor Strickland. “I know that Ohio sportsmen have worked hard to ensure that legislation includes provisions that ensure they are not treated as commercial operators. Consistent with our agreement, my support is for the current version of the legislation which includes those important protections for sportsmen and women. In other words, this legislation will in no way interfere with the rights of Ohio sportsmen and women.”
As part of a compromise between the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) and the Humane Society of the Untied States (HSUS), the Governor agreed to push for enactment of Senate Bill 95, sponsored by Senator Jim Hughes (R- Columbus), which is intended to address sub-standard conditions in some commercial dog breeding operations. As originally written the bill would have greatly impacted sporting dog kennels and hobby breeders who largely do not sell dogs. The US Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA), through its Sporting Dog Defense Coalition, worked vigorously with legislators to convince them to adopt amendments ensuring that sportsmen were not treated as commercial operators. Adoption of these amendments in the current Senate bill allowed the Alliance and its coalition allies to withdraw opposition to the legislation. Now sportsmen are counting on Governor Strickland to help preserve the protections.
“We really appreciate the Governor making it clear that he will not allow any bill to become law unless it maintains critical protections for the sporting dog community,” said Rob Sexton, vice president for government affairs for the USSA. “Without these protections, law abiding sportsmen and other enthusiasts would be run out of existence because they do not produce enough revenue to offset the cost of regulations and restrictions. Senator Hughes agreed to these changes to prevent that from happening and with the Governor’s pledge, sporting dog owners can rest a lot easier.”
The compromise between HSUS and OFBF resulted in the animal rights group agreeing not to submit signatures for a ballot issue that would have forced new regulations on Ohio’s livestock industry. In exchange, the Governor agreed to support specific changes in livestock pen sizes to be phased in over the next 15 years, the dog breeding bill, legislation dealing with cockfighting and issue an executive order concerning exotic animal ownership.

A last spring training session 2010 provided the cover of the Dutch bi-monthly hunting dogs magazine De Jachthond (The Hunting Dog). Pictured is Irish-American bred Giulla Redskin O'Conloch (Echlin O'Conloch x Redwing White Lightning).

The mag brings five pages with many pictures on working Irish setters (red and red &white) in the Netherlands. A profile is dedicated to under more two European top performers: Dutch bred, Irish owned IFTCH Pallas Green Harriet (r&w) and French top dog Urtis de la Chaume di Rigaut (red), topping EC and WC. They are close relatives.

There are interviews with prominent field-trialers under whom Jan Nooijen, who trialed pointers and Gordon setters to top levels in European and world championships. He will now try to get the red setters on top as well.

Sherry Ebert For the Hall of Fame

The year was 2003 and Ms. Sherry Ebert was part of the Judicial Saddle for the Irish Setter Club of America’s National Championship. When she addressed the club she said; “I am coming back to win this Championship.” She had no idea where that comment was going to lead her!

In 2004 Ms. Georgia Brown arranged for Sherry to present a training seminar in Texas and the die was cast. Sherry went home with a puppy and the following summer Texas Red Dogs began to head to North Dakota. Following is a record of the achievements resulting from the union of Sherry and Kyle Ebert and the Texas Irish Red Setters.

Minnesota Bird Hunters Association held their spring trial April 3. The competition that day was all white dogs leaving Moxi as the only red dog in this event. At the end of the day Moxi brought home 2nd place in the Open Shooting Dog stake.

Supreme Court Rules On Animal Cruelty Law...

Free speech advocates praised Tuesday’s US Supreme Court decision striking down a federal law banning depictions of animal cruelty.

At the same time, animal rights groups are calling on Congress to enact a new, more targeted law, to prevent trafficking in photos and videos depicting acts of severe animal cruelty, including so-called "crush" videos.

In striking down the 1999 Depiction of Animal Cruelty Act, Chief Justice John Roberts said the law was substantially overbroad and could criminalize depictions of entirely lawful conduct such as hunting videos and magazines. The vote was 8 to 1.

“It is clear from the opinion and the size of the majority that the court heard the many voices concerned about this law,” said David Horowitz, executive director of the Media Coalition, a free-speech advocacy group. “This law put at risk a broad range of newspaper articles, films, books, and images of hunting and wasn’t limited to dogfighting videos,” he said.

The 1999 law was aimed in part at outlawing the production and distribution of “crush videos” involving depictions of small animals being tortured and killed by women in high heel shoes. The videos were sold in an underground trade as part of a sexual fetish.

But the 1999 law also outlawed depictions of other acts of animal cruelty.

Free-speech advocates
The high court case stemmed from the arrest and conviction of a Virginia-based documentary producer named Robert Stevens who sold videos containing scenes of dogfights. Mr. Stevens said his videos were aimed at portraying the aggressive characteristics of pit bulls and the use of pit bulls in hunting. He argued that his documentaries were protected by the First Amendment.

A federal judge disagreed and a jury convicted him of selling banned depictions of dog fights in violation of the 1999 law. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

A federal appeals court overturned the conviction by declaring the underlying law unconstitutional. On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court also declared the law unconstitutional, but on different legal grounds.

In doing so, the high court rejected an attempt by the Obama administration to create a free speech balancing test that would weigh the value of the disputed speech against its societal costs to determine if it qualified for First Amendment protection.

“As a general principle, the First Amendment bars our government from dictating what Americans are allowed to see, read, speak, or hear,” said Gene Schaerr, a Washington lawyer who filed a friend of the court brief in the case on behalf of the Cato Institute. “Although one may debate the importance of public expression with regard to cruelty to animals … the government’s effort to remove any area of public expression from the First Amendment’s protection would have been highly troubling,” he said in a statement.

Mr. Horowitz agreed. “Giving the government freewheeling authority to judge the social worth of words and images is a dangerous proposition,” he said. “This landmark ruling affirms that First Amendment protections are not subject to balancing tests or limited to speech with so-called serious value.”

Animal-rights advocates
Officials at the Humane Society said they were disappointed by the decision striking down the law, but were hopeful Congress would pass new legislation.

“The Supreme Court’s decision gives us a clear pathway to enact a narrower ban on the sale of videos depicting malicious acts of cruelty, including animal crush videos and dogfighting,” said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States.

“Congress should act swiftly to make sure the First Amendment is not used as a shield for those committing barbaric acts of cruelty, and then peddling their videos on the Internet,” he said in a statement.

The group quoted from Justice Samuel Alito’s dissenting opinion. Justice Alito said the 1999 law was a “valuable statute that was enacted not to suppress speech, but to prevent horrific acts of animal cruelty – in particular the creation and commercial exploitation of crush videos, a form of depraved entertainment that has no social value.”

Alito said that the animals depicted in crush videos are “living creatures that experience excruciating pain.”

He said American society has long banned such cruelty.

Here are some preliminary results from the ongoing National Red Setter FTC Spring Championship and supporting stakes...

Breakstone, owned and handled by Dr. Roger Boser, has won the Open Championship; runner-up is Rocky's Straight Arrow, owned by Brian Gelinas and handled by Don Jones. A total of 21 dogs entered and ran.

The Red Setter Futurity is ongoing as of this posting, with 2 braces completed and 5 to go...

In the Open Walking Shooting Dog Classic, Her Ruby Red Slipper took the 1st, owned and handled by Al Fazenbaker. Second was Hondo Muldoon, owned and handled by Jim Ashby; 3rd went to Meteu Medicine Man, owned and handled by Al Fazenbaker. A total of 10 dogs in the stake.

The Open Walking Derby was won by "Red" , owned and handled by Bill Aughenbaugh; don't have 2nd place dog name available right now, but I think the dog was handled by Billie Vaughn of Come Back Kennels; third was taken by Conneaut Creek Holly's Memory, owned and handled by Al Fazenbaker.

(From ABC News) A major Australian wine exporter facing a backlash in the United States for donating to a key animal rights group says it will take its support elsewhere in the future.

The $100,000 donation by Yellow Tail Wines to the Humane Society of the United States' (HSUS) animal rescue program has prompted a flurry of angry online postings in the US calling for people to boycott the wine.

The HSUS describes itself as the United States' largest and most effective animal protection organisation and it sponsors workshops that teach people how to lobby for animal protection laws.

In response to the donation, a page called Yellow Fail has been set up on the Facebook social networking site and has attracted more than 3,000 fans.

A rancher from South Dakota has posted an online video of himself pouring the wine onto the snow in front of his cattle and urging others to do the same.

The issue has also prompted an article in the New York Post newspaper and comments in various US blogs.

Yellow Tail, owned by the Casella Wines company based at Yenda in the New South Wales Riverina, says it is the first time it has given money to the HSUS.

In a statement to ABC News, the managing director of Casella Wines, John Casella, says the company will look to non-political groups in the future.

"Yellow Tail is committed to the plight of animals in need and as a result, we can confirm that through any future activity, we will be looking to other non-profit organisations without lobbying interests that best deliver on our intended outcome of saving animals," the statement said.

Mr Casella says he never anticipated any negative criticism of the donation and the intention of the partnership with the HSUS was to celebrate and save animals.

"Being farmers ourselves, we acknowledge those who care for their land and their environment, just as we do," he said.

"We are proud of our rural heritage and value a solid relationship with agricultural communities around the world."

The HSUS says the partnership is about celebrating animals and the money will support the organisation's rescue team, which saves animals from natural disasters or cruelty.

BIRD DOG MUSEUM CAMPAIGN

The Bird Dog Foundation has embarked upon a major construction initiative to expand the available floor space for the Bird Dog Museum. This expansion will include providing additional space for several continental breeds as well as the red setter. The Bird Dog Foundation has set an ambitious goal of $500,000; $250,000 will be used for construction, and the remaining monies will be used to establish and Endowment Fund to provide long-term operational and maintenance funding for the addition. To date, over $100,000 has been raised. The target date for construction is summer of 2010. The Bird Dog Foundation is asking for our help in achieving this ambitious goal.

The Board of Directors of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club is dedicated and supportive of this initiative by the Bird Dog Foundation. Don Beauchamp, President of the NRSFTC, has set a club goal of raising $25,000 for the museum addition. He backed up his request by making a personal donation of $1,000 on behalf of the NRSFTC. The Board of Directors has also passed a resolution making a donation of $1,000 from the club’s general fund for the cause.

This initiative is critical to the National Red Setter Field Trial Club. At last we will have an opportunity to showcase our dogs, our history, and our heritage in a place that is the hub of the sporting dogs of America. What better way to showcase our pursuit of the Purest Challenge! We need your help.

Our club goal is $25,000. The club is offering several levels of donations. All donors giving $100 or more will have their name inscribed on a plaque which will be permanently displayed at the Bird Dog Museum at the red setter display. Be a part of this important moment in our heritage.

It is with great sadness that I share this news with members of the NRSFTC. Tom Moffat, lifetime member died on January 31st of complications related to a ruptured appendix. Tom was 84 years old. The Moffats have not been able to attend trials in many years but they still enjoyed reading about the club activities and following our quest for the Purest Challenge. During their active years with the NRSFTC, the Moffats each held various club offices—including that of editor The Flushing Whip. The Moffats celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on December 28th. Marjorie and Tom lived throughout lower Michigan during the early years of their marriage but in 1985 they began spending their summers on Gulliver Lake on the Upper Peninsula. They liked it so well that they moved there permanently in 1994. Please take a moment and send your condolences to Marge. She’d love to hear from old friends and new. Ohio to eliminate horse-back dog training...

I have received preliminary information from the state of Ohio (Division of Wildlife) that they intend to eliminate all dog training from horseback at the dog training areas in the state where such activity is still ongoing. According to the DOW, such use is "incompatiable" with the intended land use. I will post additional information when it becomes available.

A few months ago Don Beauchamp of Cheney Kansas reported that a puppy out of one of his red setters (Chaparral) had placed in a big All Age stake on the North Dakota Prairies. Kylie’s Rising Star (red setter male whelped Sept. 4, 2008) took a 3^rd place against 24 major circuit All-Age Derbies. Nine professional All-Age handlers competed with their top prospects at the Dr. D.E. Hawthorne Border Classics hosted by the North Dakota Open All-Age Field Trial Club at Columbus, North Dakota, September 9, 2009. The open All-Age Derby concluded on September 15. Star was only 1 year old at the time of the trial.

Well, we finally got a couple of pics of this dog. Better yet, "Star" is owned by a 6 year old girl in Texas by the name of Kylie Hill who sometimes handles her off of horseback! She occasionally lets her dad Gary work the dog :) Great job Kylie, Gary, and Star!

The Purebred Canine

While the bench and show community continues to espouse the advantages of breeding "purebred" dogs, the reality of this archaic and ill-conceived mis-understanding of canine genetics is simple... breeding purebred dogs for generation after generation without regard to their working qualities produces dogs with multiple health problems.

The National Red Setter Field Trial Club uses a performance-based breeding standard. We do not believe that breeding dogs for show is a sound genetic tool, and in fact, will result in genetic issues that will cause health problems in the breed.
